Caludon Park

I remember as a child in the early 60's the thrill of going to see my Grandparents who lived in Wyken. The thrill, because as a City centre child I was amazed at the big open space of Caludon park, the magnificent row of huge Elm trees, the fantastic floral display around the castle ruins and of course the mysterious Caludon castle itself. The highlight however was on a hot summer Sunday afternoon with a picnic and the paddle in the cool pool. Then there was the playground with the swings, slides and roundabout, the thwack of tennis balls in the tennis court and occasionally the cry of  owzat.  In the winter the shouts of players and spectators as the numerous football pitches were used
In the early seventies my parents moved back to Wyken and once again in my early teens I would hang around in the park. Nothing much had changed we could still go frog hunting in one of the two "Marshes" between the park and Bodmin road and paddle in the pool or outrun "Parky" when he caught us trying to get conkers out of the trees, or trying to climb the castle chimney.
The last time I really saw the park was in the early eighties when (now married and still living in Wyken) I used to walk my dog there. Imagine my  disgust when I recently (2005) visited the park and saw the sorry state it was in.
